Open Architecture Network Selects Classroom Winner

Hi all,

Check out the winner for the Classroom challenge. This is a great project, and it is in the US. I would hope that their attention to sustainablity becomes the standard for all schools. Hi there fellow afhcharlestonians. September 18th is the annual Park(ing) day. This is a day when groups all accross the country take over parking spaces and create small mini-parks for a day. I think this would be a great project for afhcharleston, is there anyone who would like to take this on. I think it would be interesting to take this to the next level, like in the middle of an abondoned parking lot, one similiar to the old Wal-Mart on Glen McConnell. Dear Mathew and Amy & Charleston Chapter Members, Architecture for Humanity received a request from the White House and the Corporation for National & Community Service in regard to the 'summer of service' (http://serve.gov). They are looking for organizations with local chapters in need of volunteers as we are one of the only large-scale 'architecture' focused groups in the country.

They have asked if we can come up with at least 10 projects (in need of volunteers). Attached please find is an excel form that we are asking you to fill out and return to us as soon as possible. All the information we receive from chapters will have to be relayed to the Corporation for National & Community Service by Tuesday (tomorrow).

I apologize for the short notice, but we just found out about this opportunity earlier today and think that this is a great opportunity for all of us to participate in the Summer of Service.

Project 2.0 | Guerrilla Bench

The latest project from afh | charleston. Thank you to Fisher Recycling, Kiawah Island Resorts, Lowe's, JMO Woodworks, A&E Printing, Carolina Nurseries, Hyam's Nursery, Studio A Architecture (Whitney Powers), Liollio Architecture (Tommy Schrimpf), Thompson + Young Design (Jon Thompson), LS3P Associates, and Team.Liollio. These individuals and groups contributed a great deal to the intellectual and monetary pursuit of the Guerrilla Bench Project. We had a great time designing and building the Guerrilla Benches and we appreciate all your guidance.

afh | charleston is officially a chapter today. That doesn't really change much of the work we are doiong, but I thought I would share this. Keep your eye out for some coming announcements via email.

Community Awareness Questionnarre.

In advance of the charrette, we would like to get some feedback from the community that we are working for. The charrette team is developing a questionnaire and the A-Team is pulling together maps and background information. We would like your help for the questionnaire. Please post a question for consideration to be added to the questionnaire. The questionnaire will be distributed to the community and collected prior to the charette. Thank you for your help. We are very close to starting some really good work in Charleston. I look forward to seeing everyone on the 24th.

January Meeting

I hope the New Year is finding you well.  We have had some great meetings regarding our first project....Crossing the Crosstown.  We think the best way to begin our own awareness of the site is to have......you've got it. A SITE VISIT.  So on January 24th we will have a Walking Tour that will zig-zag across the Crosstown, and will culminate in a local bar.  If you can't make the tour please feel free to catch us afterwards at the Recovery Room. 

We will meet at 3pm (which I hear is the majic hour) at President St. and Spring St.  Please come with us and use this time to orient yourself, photograph, and maybe just gain a better understanding of the area and all its complexity and beauty.

Project 1.0 | community awareness

The inaugural project will be a focused on the issue of safety for the pedestrians and cyclists in the neighborhoods bounding the crosstown.  This hazard discourages anyone not in an automobile from traveling this path between Elliotborough and North Central. AFH, along with these Communities, would like to explore the nature of pedestrian and bicycle traffic and what would be good solutions and interventions that AFH can accomplish on behalf of the surrounding neighborhoods.

AFH - Charleston Project 1.0

We had another good night of drinks and discussion. Thanks for joining us last Thursday. Our first project will be, drumroll please!

Crossing the Crosstown Create a pathing, and signage which will make automobiles more aware of the pedestrians that are crossing. Signs could include ways for educating the pedestrians about safety while crossing. Ideas, planning, and implementation should be done in one to two days. This can culminate with a kick-off party, for our next project, in the park on Line St. or in front of Mitchell Elementary School.

The plan right now is to have another planning meeting with the Design Selection Team. We are still looking for memebers to join our various committees.

Fundraising/Event Organization
Administration
Project Managment Committee: which will be specific to a project and is a short term commitment, as it will run until the project is completed.

Since we have our first project we will be creating the Project Management Committee in tandum with the Design Selection Committee.

The hope is to schedule a day in January, possibly a Saturday, and run a charette for ideas on creating awareness for the issue of Pedestrains vs. the Crosstown. Plese keep an eye on the Blog, your email (if your not on the list email afh.charleston@gmail.com) and the Facebook page for dates and more information. We are also throwing around the idea of having a casual Happy Hour sometime in December.

Once again thanks so much we are all really excited about this first project!

Projects

There have been a few project ideas already posted and for those of you that have emailed me, I will start adding them as comments to this post.  Please use the comment function below to add your ideas for projects.

Here are a few of the ideas we discussed at the committee meeting last week.

Sustainable Awareness Project | Help people in need upgrade their homes to make them more efficient and more sustainable with good design in mind. This can also be an awareness project where we have a competition to design a better looking efficient or sustainable item.  We might be able to team up with the Sustainability Institute.
 
Crossing the Crosstown | Create a pathing, and signage which will make automobiles more aware of the pedestrians that are crossing. This can culminate with a kick-off party, for our next project, in the park on Line St. or in front of Mitchell Elementary School.
 
Playground Redux | Select a park that is either in dis-repair, under used, lacking in equipment to refurbish.  We might even look for a place that a formal park doesn't exist, but the neighborhood uses.  This project could be a competition, we would need to raise the funds initially and use the amount of money as a restriction to the project.  There needs to be involvement from the community that uses the park, which will also be a requirement of any participant in the competition.
 
Accessible Ramp | A lot of us really like the basic idea behind this project.  We have access to lists of people in need.  We should be able to fund the project easily and hopefully a few times over to help as many people as possible.  Client involvement with the design team is vital.
 
Transportable Elderly Cottage | This should be a goal for the year, but definitely need to be more established to take this on.  We are still very intrigued by this project, and we hope to take it on in the near future.
